The Presidio meteor shower was one of the more popular events that happened around town. People came out with picnics and blankets, mothers and fathers brought their children out to see the best of what Mother Nature had to offer, and lovers came out with wine and dreamed of their future while looking up to the sky.

Glenda had invited twenty people over and they were all in the yard around the best bonfire you could ever see. Chatting and talking waiting for the show to start, Reni and Erin had made sure that Char and Gabe ended up sitting next to each other as everyone reclined in their chairs around the fire under a nearly pitch black moonless sky and gazed up, letting their eyes adjust to the light, or lack thereof. Gabe kept looking at Char out of the corner of his eye watching her smiling; Char enjoying the enchanted evening. The Marrow estate was right at the edge of town and while there were streetlights out front, they were in almost total darkness in the back…except for the stars.

As the meteor shower started, there was not much said at first; there was just the occasional, “Did you see that? Oh my… Wow!” Every few seconds they were treated to another bright streak of light high over the hill.

They watched for about an hour, the silence only broken by brief exclamations of appreciation. Finally as the light show started to wind down, guests started to make their way to their cars to go home. Char said her goodbyes saying she was heading in for bed.

Reni too decided to head in to bed thanking Glenda for such a magical evening. “I have enjoyed a simple pleasure I’d formerly missed amid the light noise of the big city. Such a beautiful display of God’s amazing handiwork right here in small town North Carolina.”

“HA! I told you would turn her into a country girl yet, Char,” Erin said from her seat on the opposite side of the bonfire.

“You sure did! Come on, Reni. Bring your country ass to bed,” Char said laughing. They all laughed as Char started back toward the house.

“Char! Wait, can I talk to you about something for the wedding?” Gabe said. He knew that was the only subject Char would be willingly to talk to him about so he did what he had to do.

Looking around the bonfire and all of them, Char was skeptical, but wanted to make sure Erin’s day was perfect.

“Sure... You want to walk to the house with me?” she said to him in a disinterested tone.

“Actually there is something I need to show you. Can we take a short ride? It’s just five or ten minutes away,” Gabe said.

Char put her head back looking up at the stars. She was tired, frustrated and just wanted to go to bed but said, “Sure, let me grab my shoes,” before heading back toward the house.

Gabe looked back at Erin and Reni, who gave him a thumbs up and said, “Don’t say anything stupid this time,” respectively.
